After having attacked the players of american football as it does about once per month since the month of may, Donald Trump has found a new target, Friday. In a tweet the morning, the president of the United States has given free rein to his anger against Turkey. “I just allow the doubling of customs duty on Steel and Aluminum for Turkey, given that their currency, the Turkish lira, plunges quickly in the face of our very strong Dollar! The Aluminum will now be 20% and Steel 50%. Our relations with Turkey are not good in this time!”, he said.
This attack comes as diplomatic tensions increase between Washington and Ankara. In question : the imprisonment by Turkey of an american pastor, Andrew Brunson, which has given rise to sanctions on the part of the United States. It is in this context that the Turkish lira has collapsed, a shift that continued Friday, as the country’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan had to declare, bravache : “If they have dollars, we have our people, we have the right and we have Allah!”
I just have authorized a doubling of Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum with respect to Turkey as their currency, the Turkish Lira, and slides rapidly downward against our very strong Dollar! Aluminum will now be 20% and Steel 50%. Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!

Donald Trump had warned its Turkish counterpart, the 18th July last, by a tweet comminatory referring to the case of Andrew Brunson, “a shame” total. While the Turkish government had hoped to obtain in exchange for the pastor for the extradition of Fetullah Gulen, the bête noire of the president Erdogan, whom he accuses of being behind the attempted coup d’état in 2016, the United States had firmly refused.
Even before that the case of pastor Brunson aggravates the creates diplomatic friction, the initiative of Donald Trump for the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel had robbed the Turkey, already angry at the support given to the militias of kurds in Syria.
During his meeting with Recep Tayyip Erdogan in September 2017 in New York city, Donald Trump had yet not skimp on the praise. “It is a great honour and a privilege, because it has become one of my friends, to present to you the president Erdogan of Turkey. It manages a part of the world very difficult. It is very, very heavily involved, and frankly, it gets very good results,” was ecstatic, Donald Trump, even as the authoritarian drift of the president has been the object of many criticisms. During a visit to Washington in may 2017, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, had given him the “dear friend”. It was before a brawl involving members of the presidential security Turkish broke out in the heart of Washington, to the amazement of the hosts of the Turkish president.
