Man City’s new £6m wonderkid Morgan Rogers made his debut for WBA at 16 and was ‘head and shoulders’ above everyone at youth level

MAN CITY fans may still rue the day Jadon Sancho left for Borussia Dortmund, but in new signing Morgan Rogers they’ve got a new wonderkid who could drive them wild.

The £6m buy, the biggest fee for a 16-year-old since Arsenal splashed £9m on Theo Walcott, arrives at the Etihad from WBA with much fanfare and the label ‘the new Dele Alli.’

But you could argue that the Spurs superstar wasn’t as advanced at this stage in his career as his apparent heir.

Rogers made his senior debut in the Emirates FA Cup last February as the Baggies were beaten 3-1 at home by Brighton.

His potential again came to the fore in March when England’s Under 17s thrashed Switzerland 5-2 in a European qualifier.

Putting in a man-of-the-match performance, Rogers scored twice and was a constant threat to Swiss defenders who were left second-guessing his every more.

It’s no wonder Pep Guardiola swooped this summer, in fear of losing the talent to a rival.

HE STARTED YOUNG

Rogers was only seven when he was scouted by WBA.

But it was Birmingham City folk hero Paul Tait who saw glimpses of his ability at his football coaching course in Halesowen.

I couldn’t believe the ability he had for someone so young, I was absolutely amazed at the talent he was showing.”

Former coach Paul Tait

“He first came at the age of about four or five,” Tait told the Birmingham Mail.

“I have had a lot of kids who have come through the training, but the first time I saw him I looked at him and I thought ‘Jesus, this kid is something else.

“I couldn’t believe the ability he had for someone so young, I was absolutely amazed at the talent he was showing.”

By six, Tait decided to move Rogers up to a higher age group because he was already streets ahead of anyone his own age.

“In the end I stopped him training with his own age group and at the age of six I moved him into the nine and ten-year-old age group,” Tait continued.

“I knew physically he wouldn’t be able to handle it but I wanted to see how he was technically – and he absolutely destroyed them too.

“At that age it’s ball control, it’s speed over the ground, he used to just glide, he had left foot, right foot, he just stood out from the crowd.

“If I had 50 children there he was head and shoulders above everyone. He was literally incredible for someone that age.”

BAGGIES CAME CALLING

With his football connections, Tait was able to offer Rogers an opportunity with either Birmingham or West Brom.

Coming from a family of Baggies fans, there was no contest for the aspiring footballer.

“In the space of six months the Albion couldn’t believe how good he was, they said he was incredible and thanked me for bringing him.”

Tait said: “He said ‘I am a West Brom fan’. I did the same, I played for Birmingham as a fan and there is nothing better.

“I knew he would be looked after at West Brom, who for me were the best academy in the Midlands.

“In the space of six months the Albion couldn’t believe how good he was, they said he was incredible and thanked me for bringing him.”

At the 2018 Syrenka Cup in Poland, Rogers showed he loves playing for his country.

He grabbed a hat-trick as England Under 17s beat Belgium 6-2 to win the trophy.

Before that he found the net in games against Norway and Portugal to finish the tournament as the leading goalscorer.

HOW FAR CAN HE GO?

His first ever coach Tait believes the sky’s the limit for Rogers, who is destined for big things.

He said: “Everyone can see if he keeps his feet on the floor, which I am sure he will, he has got a fantastic future ahead of him.

“He has got all the attributes to play in the Premier League.”

And with the guidance of Guardiola, you can bet he won’t just be playing but starring in the Premier League too.
