Man Utd boss Solskjaer warns De Gea he ‘must earn place’ after costly Everton blunders as Henderson waits in wings

De Gea, 30, was first criticised for pushing the ball out straight to Abdoulaye Doucoure for Everton’s first.

And then Gary Neville led the criticism of him following his weak attempt to block Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring the third.

De Gea has been a mainstay in the United line-up for nearly decade.

But Solskjaer is adamant past reputations count for little with him as he warned the stopper:“Every player has to earn his place. We’re a squad with competition and that applies to every single one in the team.”

Dean Henderson, 23, is chomping at the bit for regular starts following his two-year successful stint at Sheffield United.

The England international looks set to get the nod for tomorrow’s FA Cup clash against West Ham.

And outcasted keeper Seergio Romero is back training at Carrington after not yet managing to secure a move to the MLS.

The Argentinian ace was allowed home over Christmas after being given the green light to secure an exit.

But he has been named in Solskjaer’s 25-man for the remainder of the Premier League season.

United legend Neville was working for Sky Sports as a pundit on Saturday and watched on in horror as Calvert-Lewin touched him after meeting a flick on in the 95th-minute.

He said: “De Gea doesn’t come out in line with the ball. You want him to come out and eat the striker.”

And fellow Sky pundit Jamie Redknapp added: “De Gea has got to take everything. He’s got to be brave and assess the situation.

“If he comes out with authority, I have no doubt he wins this. He was at fault for the first goal and certainly at fault there.”
