Via Instagram The owner of a new coffee shop near Bangkok, Thailand was looking for an idea to drum up some business, and what better way than the age-old marketing technique ‘sex sells’. The problem is his plan may end up landing him in the slammer for 3 to 5 years.
Via Instagram Prasong Runnakorn, the owner of Nina’s Coffee, decided to use two models dressed in only panties and heels, with aprons covering their fun bags in the hopes of attracting customers to his café.
Minggomut ‘Ming’ Kongsawas, posed for pictures while the other, Arisa Suwannawong, was featured in a video. When the owner posted the scantily clad women online last week, he definitely turned some heads, but it probably wasn’t the attention he was looking for.
Via Instagram Almost immediately the Internet was in an uproar. Now I know what you’re thinking. What’s the big deal? We see sex being used to sell products regularly. Hell, there are already these kinds of coffee shops in the States! And the half-naked girls actually work there ( Cowgirls Espresso in Seattle, Bikini Baristas in Washington). Well in the extremely conservative (depending on where you look…) country of Thailand, sharing these pictures turned out to be a crime, and now the owner is going to need a lawyer instead of sales.
Via Instagram Runnakorn, who turned himself in on February 4, was charged with publically uploading obscene materials. In a statement to a local media outlet, police commented, “The owner said he didn’t know better and admitted it was a way to publicize his coffee shop that just opened last Tuesday. He didn’t realize it would break the law, because the model in the photos wasn’t fully naked”.
Regardless, he is still facing a potentially harsh punishment, including 3-5 years in jail and a fine of 100,000 Thai baht ($3,165 US).
Via Instagram For their parts in it, the models claim that they were not paid and instead they posed for the pictures and video out of the goodness of their… hearts. “They are a new business and didn’t have customers so I just wanted to help. I have apologized for this. I hope people will forgive me. I didn’t know how angry so many people would be about it”, said Arisa.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m not mad about it. Not at all! Take a look at the rest of the frothy photos of Ming.
Sorry, not that Ming…
Via Facebook And here’s the video of Arisa that’s already garnered 1.3 million views at the time of this posting.
