Massive lake of liquid water detected on Mars by Red Planet orbiter

A MARS probe has detected a massive lake of liquid water hidden beneath the planet’s southern ice sheets.

If confirmed, the remarkable find would mark the first time a long-lasting reservoir of liquid water has been found on the Red Planet.

“This subsurface anomaly on Mars has radar properties matching water or water-rich sediments,” saod Roberto Orosei, principal investigator of the MARSIS experiment and lead author of the paper published in the journal Science today.

“This is simply one tiny study area; it’s associate degree exciting prospect to assume there may well be a lot of of those underground pockets of water elsewhere, however to be discovered.”
