Meghan Markle’s Remembrance Day outfit looks similar to one worn by Princess Diana in 1991, fans say

Princess Diana is still praised for her perfectly polished royal style.

So it is of no surprise the Duchess of Sussex turns to the late royal for inspiration when dressing for high profile royal events.

Yesterday Meghan Markle, 38, channelled Diana in an all-black ensemble when she joined senior royals for the Remembrance Sunday commemorations at the Cenotaph.

The outfit looked strikingly similar to one the Princess wore to the Cenotaph in 1991.

She wore the coat over what appeared to be a black round-neck dress and finished the look with a dramatic wide brim hat with a leather ribbon.

Meghan let her statement headgear do the talking on the day, only adorning her outfit with a single poppy to show her respects to the fallen.

Both the hat and the coat were reminiscent of those worn by Princess Diana to the same event 18 years prior. The Princess was 30 years old at the time.

It is not known who designed Diana’s outfit, but the coat featured a similar oversized belt buckle and the shape of the hat bears more than a passing resemblance.

Stylist’s verdict: ‘A great way to keep Diana’s memory alive’

Speaking to FEMAIL, stylist Susie Hasler, who runs Styled By Susie, said it was a ‘great’ way for the Duchess to keep Diana’s memory alive.

She said: ‘Diana influenced a generation of women with her personal style, even down to her wedding dress.

‘She remains one of the most influential style icons and it’s great to see Meghan keeping her memory alive with a near identical look.

‘As always, Meghan is great at enhancing her hourglass figure with a waist cinching belt, and this is a brilliantly conservative, yet impactful look as always.

‘Diana was a similar personality to Meghan and a real trail blazer. It’s the true show of respect to Diana to copy her original look.’

While Diana chose to accessorise the outfit with a tasteful pair of pearl drop earrings, Meghan opted to go without.

This is not the first time the Duchess has worn an outfit inspired by Diana.

In the two years since she announced her engagement to Prince Harry, Meghan has sported looks with echoes of Diana on at least 10 different occasions.

Meghan made a departure from her more subtle wardrobe when channelling Diana during an engagement in Birkenhead in January this year.

The duchess, who is well known for her love of monochrome, surprised royal watchers when she stepped out in a purple and red ensemble on Monday.

She donned a bright red coat from Canadian brand Sentaler and a purple dress from Babaton by Aritizia dress and a pair of court shoes in the same shade as her coat.

The colour palette was one favoured by her late mother-in-law.

Prince Harry’s mother had opted for the unusual colour combination on more than one occasion, first back in 1988, in Thailand, then during a state visit to Hong Kong, one year later.

She took her shoes off as a sign of respect and ensured her ensemble wasn’t too extravagant by forgoing statement accessories.

The duchess kept to the same sophisticated style for her first public appearance following the birth of her son Archie in May 2019.

Meghan donned a white frock, cinched at the waist with a matching belt, before teaming the outfit with nude high heels.
