Since President Trump took office in 2016, there has been no shortage of strange conspiracy theories about him.
But the most bizarre one of all involves his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, and it just won’t go away.
The strange story of Melania’s “double” resurfaced during a segment on The View Monday. The hosts discussed the conspiracy theory, which made headlines in 2017, that the First Lady uses a “body double” for some public events.
Jimmy Fallon even “interviewed” Melania’s double in a skit at the height of the theory’s popularity.
As Joy Behar put it this week, “some people think the First Lady is using an impostor” to skip public appearances.
As proof (or evidence to the contrary, depending on which side you take), the show played a video of Trump and Melania’s recent visit to Alabama, where many viewers thought that the First Lady looked more like a woman posing as Melania.
“I wasn’t going to go along with this but that one, in that picture, doesn’t look like her,” Behar said of the clip. “It’s a different shaped face.”
Sunny Hostin agreed: “Melania is a very tall, statuesque woman and the one that we saw, the first one that we showed, she looks kind of short,” she said.
“Look how short she looks.”
Even Ana Navarro, one of the show’s most conservative hosts, found the theory “absurd” in a funny, harmless way. But Melania was not laughing about the segment, according to a spokesperson for the First Lady.
Stephanie Grisham, Melania’s director of communications, shamed the talk show’s hosts for making light of her visit to Alabama.
“[The First Lady] and [President Trump] traveled to Alabama to pay their respects & comfort victims of the tornado devastation,” she wrote on Twitter.
“In typical fashion, [The View] chooses to laugh in the face of tragedy. Shameful.”
Whether or not you agree with the hosts that Melania looked “different” in the clip, photos showing her without her wide sunglasses at the same look much closer to the First Lady we all recognize.
