A WOMAN is feared to have gone overboard in the Atlantic after she went missing from a cruise ship travelling from Ireland to Florida.
The captain of MS Amsterdam turned the boat around in rough seas to search for the passenger, 69, after she didn’t respond to a call out yesterday.
Her family reported her missing at 6.50am after she was last seen around 1am on Wednesday.
MS Amsterdam was 240 miles of the southwest coast of Ireland when the unnamed woman, a US citizen, disappeared.
International coast guards including British crews were searching for the woman, but the search was called off last night.
The ship left Glengariff on Tuesday evening and is now headed to Fort Lauderale, its final stop.
It was turned around to the approximate location where she was last seen while staff searched the vessel.
TURNED BACK AROUND
A passenger was told that the missing woman “either fell or jumped off the ship just off the coast of Ireland”.
She disappeared just after the ship got cleared from any SAR.
Passengers weren’t informed of the situation until 9am.
A statement from the cost guard said: “HM Coastguard had been coordinating the search for a missing woman, who was last seen on a cruise ship in the early hours of Wednesday morning, approximately 240nm south west of Malin Head, Ireland.
“The search was terminated yesterday evening, pending further information. Our thoughts are with all those involved.”
A statement from ship operators Holland America Line said: “At approximately 6:50 a.m. local time, a 69-year-old female guest aboard Amsterdam was reported missing by a member of her family.
“The woman was last seen in her stateroom around 1:00 a.m.
‘JUMPED OR FELL’
“Ship staff immediately began searching the vessel, and the ship turned around to head back toward its approximate location at the time the guest had last been seen on board.
“All appropriate authorities were notified. Amsterdam was approximately 140 nautical miles southwest of the coast of Ireland when she was reported missing.
“Due to deteriorating weather conditions,Amsterdam was released from search efforts at 2:06 p.m. by Maritime Rescue Coordination Center Southampton.
“The ship then resumed its planned passage to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and is scheduled to arrive at Port Everglades May 16.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this difficult time
Holland America Line
“Amsterdam is on day 105 of a 113-day World Cruise that departed Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 22, 2019.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this difficult time.”
MS Amsterdam is a relatively small cruise ship at 780 feet in length and nine decks on board, with the capacity to carry 1,380 guests.
Facebook posts by Maria Luciano Hernandez revealed that everyone on board was accounted for on Tuesday night before the passenger disappeared.
After hours of searching the woman still hadn’t been found and the search was called off.

Hernandez wrote: “Captain Mercer just informed us that the search for our missing passenger, jointly conducted with the assistance of emergency marine operations from various countries has been discontinued after many hours.
“It is unlikely that given the weather conditions of rough seas and chilly waters the passenger would have survived after so many hours of search. Requiem in pace.”
The ship began its journey from Amsterdam, stopping off in Ireland and the UK, and is now headed to Florida in the final destination of its 20-night trip.
