NEWCASTLE UNITED have rejected West Bromwich Albion’s attempts to bring Dwight Gayle on loan to the Hawthorns as part of a deal that would sent Salomon Rondon to Tyneside.
Rondon’s switch to St James’ Park is reportedly on the verge of completion but the relegated Baggies appear to have tried to replace the Venezuelan with Gayle.
But according to the Newcastle Chronicle, this proposal was dismissed out of hand by Magpies boss Rafa Benitez, who is keen to retain Gayle.
The 28-year-old Walthamstow forward was a key component of Benitez’s side last season as they managed a top-half finish on their return to the Premier League.
With Joselu having flopped after signing last summer and Aleksandar Mitrovic set to make his loan move to Fulham permanent, the Spanish boss wants Gayle for depth up front.
The reports also claim that Newcastle offered Rolando Aarons to West Brom, but the relegated Midlanders turned them down.

The latest twist in the deal means Rondon’s transfer could be delayed for another week, as the clubs race to get a switch completed before the transfer deadline.
Premier League clubs have less time to complete deals this summer after bringing the deadline forward to before the season starts.
This summer’s window will slam shut on Thursday August 9, a day before the season opener between Leicester City and Manchester United.
Benitez will be hoping to force through the sale of Mitrovic and get Rondon in to replace him as soon as possible to get him acclimatised before the first Premier League weekend.
