One killed in aircraft crash at Royal Birkdale Golf Club

ONE person has been killed in a plane crash at the famous Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport.

The aircraft came down at the course, which has hosted the Open Championship ten times, at around 7pm this evening.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue were called to extinguish a fire which broke out when the aircraft hit the ground.

A statement from Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm following a microlight aircraft crash this evening, Thursday April 11, at the Royal Birkdale Golf Course a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“We are still establishing the facts and the identity of the person and enquiries are ongoing.”

Road closures are in place in the area including on Coastal Road.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
