Paul Young reveals he was hospitalised with pneumonia that left him strugging to walk up stairs

Paul Young has revealed he was hospitalised after battling pneumonia.

The singer, 63, who is gearing up to go on tour, admitted that the last few months have been tough as he battled the infection and he is still finding it difficult to complete everyday activities such as walking up the stairs.

He told The Mirror: ‘I have just got over pneumonia. It has been tough, took it out of me.

‘I had to admit myself to hospital in the end. It started off as a cold and then it just got worse.

‘I am still recovering from it and I am still finding it hard doing stuff like walking up stairs. The tour starts in a few weeks so I will be fit by then.’

The pop star did manage to perform a gig in January after being released from hospital where he told the crowd that he felt like he had been punched in the kidneys.   

Pneumonia is swelling of the tissue in one or both lungs. It’s usually caused by a bacterial infection.

Paul’s wife Stacey passed away in January of 2018 following a two-year battle with brain cancer.

The 52-year-old was surrounded by family as she passed away at her home in Hertfordshire.

Paul first met Stacey on the set of his video for his 1983 hit Come Back and Stay. 

They married in 1987 and went on to have three children together, daughters Levi and Layla and son Grady.

The pair split up in 2006. During the time they were separated, Stacey had her fourth child Jude with Israeli businessman Ilan Slazenger.

Touchingly the couple reunited in 2013 and Paul spoke passionately about the future of their family unit in 2014.

He described her as a ‘perfect rock’n’roll wife’ and said she never lost her wild ways but was a natural mother. 

Paul begins his spring tour on April 26 at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, East Sussex .
