Peggy McCay has died at the age of 90.

The actress starred as matriarch Caroline Brady in the soap opera Days Of Our Lives from February 1983 until 2017.

Peggy passed away from natural causes at her home on Sunday, according to TV Line.

Her Days Of Our Lives co-star Diedre Hall confirmed her passing on her Facebook page: ‘She was a friend, an activist and a real scrapper!’

Diedre continued: ‘I remember meeting her at the bedside of a dear, very ill friend. I back her up as she ferociously took on doctors and nurses to make sure he had the very best care.’

Adding: ‘Passionate and tireless. And how she loved being Caroline!’ 

Peggy was born on November 3, 1927 in New York City; her birth name was Margaret Ann McCay.

She was the only child of Catherine and Michael McCay; her father owned a construction company that she and her mother took over after he died suddenly.

Peggy graduated from Barnard College in 1949 after attending Saint Walburga’s Convent School.

After Barnard, she joined the theater company Impresaria Margo Jones and also studied with Lee Strasberg in New York City; she helped set up the acting coach’s West Coast acting studio.

Her decades long career began in 1949 when the star was only 22 years old with a role in the TV series Kraft Theater.

From there she played roles in other shows including The Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse and Somerset Maugham TV Theatre.

The TV actress starred in Love Of Life from 1951 until 1955; she played the character Vanessa Dale.

She continued to star in a variety of shows – as Myra Herbert in Alfred Hitchcock Presents in 1957, 10 episodes of Matinee Theatre and also Maverick.

There were also roles in General Hospital, Perry Mason, The Andy Griffith show, Gunsmoke, Cold Case, Lou Grant, L.A. Law, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and Ben Casey.

From 1964 until 1966 she starred as Susan Garret in 112 episodes of The Young Marrieds.

Last year marked her 34th year playing Caroline in Days Of Our Lives; in total, she played the character in 645 episodes.

She was nominated for four Daytime Emmys for her role in Days Of Our Lives; she won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in The Trials Of Rosie O’Neill.

 The actress had a Primetime Emmy nomination for her guest role on Cagney & Lacey as Mrs. Carruthers.

Peggy never married and has no children.

Frank Parker, who played her on-screen husband Shawn Brady on Days Of Our Lives passed away just weeks earlier.

He died at age 79 on September 16, 2018 due to Parkinson’s Disease complications and dementia in Vacaville, California.
