MANCHESTER UNITED’S tweet wishing Phil Jones a happy 27th birthday backfired after fans urged the club to sell the defender.
The England international has been at the club since joining from Blackburn in 2011, but is yet to convince supporters of his quality after more than 200 appearances.
Jones’ spell at Old Trafford has been plagued by numerous injuries, while a number of own goals and mistakes have caused him to be a source of ridicule.
He signed a contract extension earlier this month to tie him down at the Theatre of Dreams until 2023, but that still hasn’t stopped fans wanting him gone.
Replying the tweet United posted, one person quipped: “Happy Birthday! Try not injure yourself while opening your cards.”
While another said: “SELL HIM ON HIS BIRTHDAY!”
Another commented: “Can he turn 35 soon and retire.”
One tweeted: “God I feel like he’s been hanging around the club forever & never fulfilled his potential.”
With one simply stating: “27??? Too old to get him out my club.”
Another joked: “Happy birthday Phil. Might be best letting someone else light the candles though eh bud.”

Jones has featured in 17 games this season in all competitions, but has failed to be involved in the recent matches against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.
Nine of his 12 Premier League appearances this term have come under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the player keeping four clean sheets at the back.
He will be hoping to get the nod by the Norwegian against Liverpool on Sunday as United look to cut the gap on the Reds to 11 points.
