Prince Harry and Meghan Markle share birthday photo of Archie – though you can’t see his face

Royal fans have expressed their annoyance over not seeing Archie’s face again after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry released a new picture of their son to celebrate his second birthday.

The image, released on their Archewell site this evening, shows the Duke, 36, and Duchess of Sussex‘s firstborn holding balloons at the couple’s $14million Montecito mansion, while facing away from the camera.

It’s not the first time that Archie’s face hasn’t been visible in an official photograph shared by Meghan, 39, and Harry, with their son’s head turned into his mother’s chest in an image released to mark International Women’s Day

Moreover, the couple’s Christmas card this year didn’t exactly showcase their baby boy, with the greeting instead including a sweet illustration of the family-of-three, crafted from a picture taken by Meghan’s mother.

Fans rushed to Twitter today to bemoan not seeing more of the Duke and Duchess’ son again, with one writing: ‘Archie’s top secret face, that’s ridiculous.’

Another said: ‘Are they ashamed to show Archie’s face? I’m sure he is an adorable 2-year-old boy who is having a fabulous time playing with his balloons.’

A third added: ‘Why do they never show his face, is it because it isn’t him or is it because they are just so pretentious? We always get to see William and Catherine’s children, so why not Archie.’

However, other fans were all for seemingly hiding the little one’s face, with one person writing: ‘Why would they show his face with all the scrutiny he has already been through, his hair, his skin, leave that little baby alone.’

Another wrote: ‘You should be happy they have the forethought to not splash his face all over. He is a kid and deserves privacy. When he turns 18+… he can decide for himself what he wants.’

A third penned: ‘Thank you for sharing… I understand you want to secure his privacy. Happy birthday young man.’

Visitors to the Sussexes’ website are greeted with the new picture along with a message saying: ‘Join us in advocating for vaccine equity on Archie’s birthday.’

Harry and Meghan are appealing to well-wishers wanting to mark their son’s second birthday to donate money to pay for Covid vaccinations in disadvantaged countries.

They issued a joint statement thanking those who have offered ‘warmth and support’ for their family during the past two years in honour of Archie’s birthday, gestures which had left them ‘deeply touched’.

The couple said they were ‘incredibly grateful’ to those well-wishers who had given money to good causes, volunteered or raised donations on behalf of their son.

In the signed statement, posted on their Archewell foundation website, Harry and Megan said: ‘We will not be able to truly recover until everyone, everywhere, has equal access to the vaccine.

‘And with that intention, we are inviting you to contribute whatever you can – if you have the means to do so – to bring vaccines to families in the world’s most vulnerable places.

‘For a donation of just five dollars (£3.60), you can cover the cost of a dose for someone in need.

‘And because we were able to secure matching support from a number of organisations, that five dollars you give will automatically turn into 20 dollars (£14.40) – covering the cost of four doses.’

The Sussexes went on to say: ‘We cannot think of a more resonant way to honour our son’s birthday. If we all show up, with compassion for those we both know and don’t know, we can have a profound impact.

‘Even a small contribution can have a ripple effect. Together, we can uplift, protect and care for one another.’

The couple’s snap, shared by their pregnancy photographer to mark International Women’s Day, was released hours after Meghan and Prince Harry revealed they are expecting a baby girl during their bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview.

Meanwhile, the Sussexes showed off a lavish playhouse built for their son in the garden of their home in Montecito, California, in an illustration shared on the front of their 2020 Christmas card.

Archie was seen cuddling with his father in the drawing, crafted from a picture taken by Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland.

For Archie’s first birthday, Harry and Meghan shared an adorable family video on social media, showcasing the baby boy’s cheeky grin and head of strawberry blonde hair.

Archie showed off his first teeth as he smiled at his father behind the camera while mother Meghan read him children’s book Duck! Rabbit!.
