Queen Letizia of Spain recycles a 40-year-old dress from her mother-in-law Queen Sofía’s wardrobe

Queen Letizia of Spain has proven her thriftiness once again by recycling a 40-year-old dress from her mother-in-law Queen Sofía’s wardrobe as she joined her husband King Felipe VI to welcome the Chilean president in Madrid.

The mother-of-two, 48, who is known for recycling her outfits, stepped out today in a stunning short-sleeved frock with a floral embroidered bodice and a flared skirt.

Her mother-in-law Queen Sofía, 82, the wife of King Juan Carlos I, first debuted the outfit during a trip to Rome, Italy, in 1981.

Felipe and Letizia, parents to Princesses Leonor, 15, and Sofía, 14, received Chilean President Sebastián Piñera, who is on a visit to Spain, at the Royal Palace in Madrid, before an official lunch was held.

Looking effortlessly elegant for the occasion, Letizia appeared to have updated her mother-in-law’s dress with new silver gems on the floral decorations.

She also teamed it with a matching shimmering belt to highlight her slender waist, while sporting Magrit nude heels.

Adding a touch of extra glitz to her ensemble, she donned a pair of recycled €6,800 Chanel earrings in the shape of a feather, which were made of diamonds and white gold.

Letizia completed her look by wearing a slicked back ponytail and a smattering of glamorous makeup.

Last week Letizia and Felipe said goodbye to their daughter Princess Leonor as she left for her new boarding school in Wales.

Heir to the Spanish throne Leonor has enrolled on a £67,000, two-year course to study for her International Baccalaureate diploma at UWC Atlantic College.

The school, situated in a 12th century castle in the Vale of Glamorgan, offers activities and subjects like Tai Chi and Tibetan literature, leading it to be nicknamed ‘Hippie Hogwarts’.

UWC Atlantic College has a proven track record educating royalty. King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands studied there in the Eighties and Belgian heir to the throne Princess Elisabeth graduated last year.
