COUNTDOWN presenter Rachel Riley has a done a number on Manchester United fans – blasting their banner from a plane attacking Ed Woodward.
Visiting fans paid for a plane to fly over Turf Moor before kick-off, trailing a huge message saying: ED WOODWARD: A SPECIALIST IN FAILURE.
But Riley, who also does work for MUTV, tweeted of the banner: “This kind of thing is an embarrassment to our club. To the minority of fans – stop moaning, start supporting. #mufc”
That sparked a plane-speaking debate with her social media followers that the former Strictly Come Dancing contestant did not tiptoe around.
One fan told her: “You can support the team and hate the owners and the regime Rachel. “The club havent backed Jose so why should we back them in return…”
To which Riley replied: “We’ve spent millions… What weve lacked is the 2/3 year forward planning we used to have with the continuity under SAF/Gill. We need everyone pulling together in the same direction as a team. Moaning on a banner helps no-one.”
The fan responded by claiming United’s spending was a “drop in the ocean in comparison to income” for a club of their size.
But when he added: “Can’t debate with any Glazer apologists,” Riley retorted: “What? Since when was Ed Woodward a member of the Glazer family? Clue’s in the surname.”
Other supporters noted Riley’s links to United’s official TV station.
One said: “Rachel Riley, a regular on MUTV, in doesn’t like anything that criticises Ed Woodward shocker. Need to keep those gigs coming Rachel.”
The It’s Not Rocket Science star counted to ten and maintained a dignified silence over such potshots.
But she responded to more measured questions or observations.
One United supporter asked: “What if there’s something severely wrong with the club?”
The game-show host answered: “Positive criticism and new ideas are fine. Armchair non-constructive blame passing is just silly and unhelpful.”
In other words, if you do not have anything useful to say, buzzer off!
