Relationship expert reveals the eight ways to impress on a first date

A good first impression is always a must, but never more so than on a first date.

So how can you ensure you nail the potential to enjoy a second?

Speaking to FEMAIL, relationship expert Yvonne Allen revealed the eight ways to impress on a first date – and why repeating a person’s name will guarantee a second meet-up every time.

So what should you be doing?

1. Listen to your date

We are often told that we have two ears and one mouth for a reason, and it has never been more important to remember this when dating.

Yvonne said it is important that your date feels like they can express themselves and by listening, you can display a genuine interest in your date.

2. Mention their name

The relationship expert said often using a person’s name in situations where it seems natural is a great idea in dating:

‘Be attentive and refer to your date by name during your conversation as this will make them feel acknowledged and valued,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.

In addition to this, by mentioning someone’s name, this will ‘constantly help to keep them engaged and involved’ in the date.

Names equal connections, Yvonne added. So make sure to repeat them.

3. Keep the conversation balanced and relatively light

Yvonne said on a date people should be careful of what topics they explore and how they go about it.

Heavy topics around personal family life or past relationships are a real turn off and and asking about these topics can seem like an interrogation.

Instead, she said your questions should be focused on hobbies and interests to find out what you could enjoy together – possibly on your next date.

‘Men seeking to impress need to be wary of “the peacock phenomenon”,’ Yvonne added.

‘While you may want to impress your date, it’s important to remember to ask your date about themselves.

‘First date conversation should not be an interrogation. It is an opportunity for you both to get to know each enough to decide if you would like to meet again.’

4. Don’t complain and avoid conflict

Maintaining a positive tone on a first date is crucial to coming across as a fun person to be with.

While venting about your day might be personally satisfying, it isn’t fun for your date who barely knows you.

‘Be honest about yourself and your life, and focus on topics that will stimulate conversation with your date,’ Yvonne said.

‘Some topics such as religion, politics or global issues can be polarising, and are best left for another time.’

5. Make sure your date feels special

All the attributes you put forward when on a date are designed to create a good feeling for the other party.

The relationship expert said one way to do this is to give the person your full attention.

‘Compliment them and don’t be distracted by other things, including your phone. Put it away. Give them your full attention,’ she said.

6. Dress appropriately for the date

Above all, Yvonne said when dressing for a date you should dress in something that is comfortable, presentable and suitable for the type of date you are on.

You want to look like you have put in some sort of effort with your appearance and so should style yourself accordingly.

‘If you are a woman coming from work, add some glamour and change your top, put on some bling earrings or necklace, or let out your hair,’ she said.

7. Plan ahead and don’t stress

Planning ahead is important in not letting yourself get worked up on a date.

Book a table to make sure you have a seat and if things go sideways it is crucial to stay calm and work through the issues.

‘If things don’t go to plan, don’t get angry, frustrated or upset,’ Yvonne said.

‘Just work through an alternative solution with your date and do something else. Your ability to deal with pressure is also on display and part of the dating process.’

8. Remember to enjoy yourselves

Among all the aspects of a date that can leave your date with a lasting impression the date was successful, is that you had a good time.

‘Have fun, let go a little, get to know your date and let them get to know you,’ she said.

‘This makes for a genuinely fun time.’
