Renting a car in Milan can cost almost £1,000, compared to £450 in Florida

Families hiring a car in Crete can pay twice as much as those who go to Munich, prompting one expert to suggest that wildly varying prices could put Britons off certain countries.

The figures come from analysis of rental costs in 16 popular destinations worldwide – with Milan coming off worst for the total bill.

It found that Munich and Sydney were the cheapest places for car hire without add-ons, whereas Faro in Portugal and Crete were the most expensive.

In some cases car rental can appear cheap, but common extras such as a full tank of petrol, adding a second driver and hiring a child car seat may almost triple the bill.

For example, it costs £364 to hire a Volkswagen Golf in Milan for the week from July 27 to August 3, according to the insurer iCarhireinsurance.

It would cost £446 to hire a car with upgrades including a child's car seat and satnav for a week in Florida, pictured above, between the dates of July 27 and August 3

But extras such as a tank of petrol, an additional driver and a child’s car seat could boost the bill to £906, making it the most expensive location overall. 

Hiring a satnav can also be more expensive there than elsewhere at £108 for a week – nearly triple the £37 cost in Queenstown, New Zealand.

Fuel is dearest in Amsterdam at £65 for a full tank, compared with just £26 in Florida.

Some add-ons such as ‘super damage waiver’ insurance to pay the excess in the event of any damage are free in Florida, while in Sydney the same cover would cost more than £200.

Ernesto Suarez, founder of iCarhireinsurance, said: ‘Our annual study highlights the importance of shopping around when booking your hire car.

‘It might even affect the choice of country you decide to visit.’

Dan Hutson, of Comparethemarket.com, said: ‘With car hire it always pays to do your research before heading off or you could find yourself with a nasty surprise.
