Earthquake of 7.1 off the coast of New Caledonia

An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 was recorded on Wednesday at more than 200 km to the east of the French islands of New Caledonia, without the damage, reported the american institute of seismology.

No tsunami alert has not been triggered in the wake of this earthquake, whose epicenter was located 27 km depth in the Pacific ocean and 230 km to the east of the island of Maré, the most eastern of the Loyalty islands.

“Small tsunami waves have been observed”, reported to the Center of a tsunami alert for Australia, adding that “people on the coastal areas must exercise a level of attention normal, without any particular action”.

According to the australian authorities, the earthquake could be felt in New Caledonia, but the radius of damage around the epicentre is of the order of 100 km, excluding any area of land.
