Spain’s Queen Letizia pays her first visit to father-in-law King Juan Carlos

Queen Letizia of Spain visited her father-in-law King Juan Carlos in hospital yesterday as he recovers from his heart surgery.

The wife of Spain’s King Felipe sported a sleek navy and white ensemble to greet her the former monarch, who is awake and in good spirits at the Quirónsalud Madrid University Hospital.

Letizia’s visit comes a day after her husband and mother-in-law were pictured outside the hospital where Juan Carlos I is recovering.

King Felipe, 51, joined his wife, 46, as he visited his father for a second day in a row.

Palace officials said that the operation was arranged following a check-up in June and indicated that it was not an urgent procedure.

Lucia Alonso, the managing director of Madrid’s Quironsalud University Hospital, said Sunday the 81-year-old king emeritus is awake and breathing without support.

He added Juan Carlos is sitting up in bed and ‘is in good spirits.’

The triple bypass procedure Saturday was scheduled after the former king had a checkup two months ago.

The hospital said the operation was successful and without complications.

Juan Carlos abdicated in 2014 in favour of Felipe, ending a near 39-year reign.

He retired from public duties last May.

Keeping cool in the basking Spanish heat, the Queen who’s continued to reign high in the style stakes, complemented the look with a white blazer, navy loafers and a leather handbag, also designed by Carolina Herrera.

The royal couple appeared in good spirits despite the sombre occasion as they chatted to press outside the hospital.

While Letizia kept her hair well-coiffed and sported a minimal make-up look, husband Felipe dressed in archetypal summer formal wear, of white suit trousers and a linen jacket.

Wearing her brunette hair loose, the Queen’s soft waves swept her shoulders and were tucked behind her ear to show a flash of her stud earrings.

Revered by many Spaniards, Juan Carlos was considered a key figure in Spain’s transition from dictatorship to democracy following the 1975 death of General Francisco Franco.

However, his reign was tarnished in later years by accusations that he was out of touch with ordinary Spaniards, especially during the 2008 to 2014 financial crisis.
