Strictly: John Whaite DROPS Johannes and AJ Odudu fumbles lift in blunder-filled Quarter Final

Strictly Come Dancing‘s Quarter Final on Saturday saw quite the drama as two couples suffered major errors at the end of their dances in what turned out to be a blunder-filled show.

Firstly, John Whaite accidentally dropped partner Johannes Radebe at the end of their Salsa when things went wrong during a lift transition.

While AJ Odudu and Kai Widdrington fumbled their big lift, resulting in a clumsy ending to their otherwise impressive Salsa.

John and Johanne had started off well performing an energetic routine to We Are Family by Sister Sledge, but thing’s went pear-shaped as professional dancer Johannes gave John his wrong hand as they began the lift.

As a result, John was forced to pull off an awkward lift before Johannes appeared to slip from his grip and land heavily on the floor.

However, despite his usual acid-tongued remarks, Craig Revel Horwood admitted he ‘loves it when things go wrong!’

The routine was seemingly going flawlessly, with a plethora of flips and tricks throughout.

And as the dance came to a close, things unravelled as John struggled to lift Johannes in the air without their hands in the right position.

Following a stellar attempt, the South African dancer appeared to tumble out of John’s grasp, but ever the professional, Johannes styled it out and landed on the floor in style as he pulled off a pose to finish.

As they made their way towards to judges for their comments, Johannes shook his head as he remarked: ‘I’m so sorry!’

When asked by Tess Daly what he was sorry for, he replied: ‘Because I gave him the wrong hand.’

Commenting on the routine, Craig remarked: ‘It’s a shame about the last bit.

‘Look, I love it when it goes wrong, I absolutely love it, but you had absolutely no chance darling and you had to throw him on the floor in the end.

‘Normally it’s a lovely lift actually, I’d like to see it again working. But I have to say it did lack a tiny bit of dynamic and I think it’s something you need to work on.’

Motsi Mabuse told the pair: ‘I’m just gonna forget the end!’ before commending them on their ‘different energy, and attack’.

While Anton Du Beck joked: ‘I’ve had a few partners I wanted to put down’ before praising them for letting go of their inhibitions.

Despite the blunder, the duo managed to earn a respectable 32 points from the judges.

AJ meanwhile also had a nightmare during the quarter finals as he grand lift at the end of her salsa to Rhythm Is Gonna Get You/Get On Your Feet by Gloria Estefan didn’t go according to plan.

The presenter and pro partner Kai were really getting into the swing of things as the routine neared its conclusion, but the pair couldn’t ‘t pull things together with the lift, with AJ’s leg ended up awkwardly over Kai’s shoulder as he attempted to lift her.

Admitting defeat, he clumsily put her down and the duo attempted to shrug it off, before AJ pulled a fabulous pose at the end to try and salvage things.

Following the dance, an upset AJ struggled to fight back tears as she apologised to her fans for letting them down, while Kai pinned the blame on himself, stating: ‘I think I missed a hand. I’m taking the blame for that.’

AJ and Kai earned 30 points for the dance, ending up at the bottom of the leaderboard.

Meanwhile in better news, both Rhys Stephenson and  Rose Ayling-Ellis landed joint top of the leaderboard with 39 points a piece thanks to their flawless dances.

Rhys and partner Nancy Xu – who narrowly avoided being sent home last week – lit up the floor with an intense and passionate Argentine Tango to In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins.

And the judges clearly loved what they saw, with Anton gushing: ‘I absolutely nailed it! It needed to be intense, to be involved, mature –  it had all of above and more!’

While head judge Shirley Ballas enthused: ‘I’m breathless, I’m speechless, you are amazing!’

Rose meanwhile pulled off a beautiful American Smooth to This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) by Natalie Cole, with the EastEnders star looking lovely in a flowing white dress.

The actress then showed off her daring side as she launched herself into the air and was caught by Giovanni mid-air in a move that’s never been seen on the show before.

Commenting on the performance, Shirley said: ‘Before Rhys went on before you there was lots of noise, lots of clapping. You came in, you blocked it out and you delivered a performance of a lifetime. You had beautiful footwork, your posture was outstanding.’

Craig gushed over the ‘amazing lift’ and said: ‘The whole thing was absolutely amazing – fantastic!’

The show comes as Motsi Mabuse returned to the judging panel after being forced to take a week off after being pinged by NHS Test and Trace.

The professional dancer, 40, explained that while she is triple jabbed, she is currently in Germany and is not able to travel back due to UK Government guidelines, which do not recognise the vaccines she received.

Motsi’s news comes a week after Craig Revel Horwood was forced to pull out of the previous week’s show after testing positive for Covid-19.

Taking to her Twitter page on Friday, Motsi wrote: ‘I am gutted to say I will have to miss this weekend on Strictly… yesterday, I was contacted by NHS Test and Trace as being in close contact with someone on Sunday November 21 who has since tested positive.

‘Being double vaccinated & booster as I am, would normally mean exemption from isolation under the ‘close contact’ rules, but unfortunately German EU vaccinations are not recognised and neither is my booster in this instance.

‘So I must follow UK Government Guidance and can only return after 30 November 2021 to the UK. Our health is the most important thing and luckily I have been tested multiple times this week and am negative.

‘I am healthy, I am with my family that’s what matters! I wish everyone good luck, sending you my love. Keep dancing. Until then, lots of love and stay safe xx.’

The government website states the EU Digital Covid Certificate (EUDCC) is not recognised as proof of vaccination for passengers travelling to the UK.

A spokesperson for the show then confirmed that guest judge Cynthia Erivo – who covered for Craig last week – would return to take Moti’s place.
