Sweden’s Princess Sofia stuns in traditional outfit as she celebrates with Prince Carl Phillip

The sun was out for Sweden‘s National Day and Princess Sofia added an extra level of charm to the proceedings, as she emerged in traditional dress to join the festivities.

Former model Sofia 34, was joined by husband Prince Carl Phillip, 40, at the Royal Palace in Stockholm to celebrate the day.

As is traditional for senior members of the royal family, the mother-of-two donned a traditional folk costume, featuring an embroidered pinafore in the country’s national colours.

Meanwhile Prince Carl Phillip looked handsome in a smart navy suit, with a light blue tie that perfectly complimented his wife’s yellow and blue outfit.

The couple waved to crowds as they began celebrations for the day, which happens every year on June 6.

Every year the King and Queen take part in a ceremony at Skansen, Stockholm’s open-air museum, where the yellow and blue Swedish flag is run up the mast, and children in traditional peasant costume present the royals with bouquets of summer flowers.

National Day also now recognises new Swedish citizens, welcoming them with special ceremonies held around the country.

Not normally known for being the most patriotic nation, National Day has been embraced over recent years, with some groups even pushing for the country to have a national dish, according to the country’s official website.

National Day is an annual celebration held in honour of two historical events: on 6 June 1523, Gustav Vasa became king and, on the same date in 1809, the country adopted a new constitution. It became a public holiday in 2004.

Princess Sofia looked stunning in the country’s traditional yellow and blue dress.

She swept her hair back into a low pony-tail, highlighting her summer tan with a sweep of bronzer across her cheeks.

She finished the look with a pop of red lipstick that perfectly matched her coral nail vanish.

It did not appear Prince Carl Phillip’s siblings Crown Princess Victoria or Princess Madeline were in attendance at the event.

In previous years, Prince Carl Phillip and Princess Sofia’s two young children have stolen the show at the day.

The couple have three-year-old son Prince Alexander, Duke of Södermanland, and two-year-old Prince Gabriel, Duke of Dalarna together.

But this year it didn’t seem as though the children were in attendance.

And later, Prince Carl Phillip headed back inside the palace to attend a scholarship award for a drawing competition.
