The Avengers: Endgame ticket scalping wars have begun
On Tuesday this week, the tickets for Avengers: Endgame went on sale. And in slightly predictable fashion, the internet had a literal meltdown. Not a meltdown in the sense that the internet was pissed, but a meltdown in the sense that damn near every major ticketing website came crashing down under the weight of intense fan interest.
According to a statement from Fandango, one of the largest ticket sellers in the world, Avengers: Endgame holds the record for the highest day-one presales of any movie in their history. You can see that from the Tweet, but what that Tweet neglects to mention is that Avengers: Endgame beat Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens legendary record in SIX HOURS.
Suffice to say, Avengers: Endgame is going to be one of the biggest film events of all time. No one wants to miss out on opening night, and with that comes the inevitable ticket scalping to get tickets for opening night, Thursday, April 25th.
According to a report from CBR, opening night tickets have gone on sale on Ebay for $45 to $50 in “most” cases, while some others are selling between the insane $100 to $500 range. Sadly, I’m willing to bet that these tickets will all sell, due to the very real fears of being spoiled on major plot details in the legendary installment of the franchise.
Believe it or not, this is not even close to the craziest ticket scalping that’s happened in recent years. The previous record holder of highest pre-sale tickets, Star Wars: Episode VII, had the craziest rush. According to an article from Variety in 2015, tickets for opening night in major cities like New York and Los Angeles went for anywhere above $200.
Oh, and The Force Awakens had a special screening in Disney World for its premiere, and the already expensive $100 tickets were re-sold for more than $1,000.
Sadly, this stuff happens a lot.
So sadly, in fact, that there was ticket scalping going on in the office of The Chive this Tuesday. Seriously, I’m not making that up, I wish we were stronger than that in this office, but we’re not. We’re all really fucking excited too, and I can’t act like we’re above the hype.
There’s no denying that Avengers: Endgame could end up being one of the biggest film events in the world, and perhaps the only movie that has a chance of beating the number one movie in box office history, Avatar, which made a staggering $2.7 billion. With this kind of insanity going on before the movie’s even out, it’s the only movie in recent years that I can think of that has a chance.
