ENERGY-boosting protein balls are the snack no one can get enough of.
They work to sate a sweet tooth (munch on one instead of a chocolate bar), they give you a much-needed energy burst after a workout and they’re a healthy snack at any time of day. At a pinch, you can also have a couple when you’re on the run and don’t have time to grab lunch.
Energy balls are great snacks because they typically have a lot of good stuff: fibre, protein, healthy fats from coconut oil and nut butters… and you can easily make them from scratch without going near an oven.
Just whizz a few key ingredients together – we’d recommend oats, dates, coconut oil, almond butter and flaxseed, blitz them, then shape into a ball and roll in shredded coconut or cacao for a delicious pick-me-up.
You can also stock up on vegan protein balls online, from brands like Bounce and Deliciously Ella (who also has recipes for her vegan energy balls online).
It’s worth checking the ingredients before you buy: typically, many protein energy balls are made with whey, which is a no-go for vegans since it’s made from dairy.
The good news is, whether you’re vegan because of a dairy intolerance or issue or because you’d prefer not to eat any animal byproducts, there are now a range of vegan energy balls to throw into your bag or your child’s lunchbox for any occasion. Here are some of our faves.
