But just when it appeared that personal trainer James, 38, and student Owen, 19, would be walking away with £11,000 between them, Anne was given “one of the easiest questions in history”.

The Governess was asked: “What is half of 30?”

Taking to Twitter, one fan of the show raged: “#thechase is such a fix! one of the cleverest woman in the world #annehegerty gets the question ‘what is half of 30’ really.”

Another added: “What is half of 30?” Really? FIX!! @ITV #THECHASE.”

A third simply wrote: “Big prize money = bring out the easy questions for the chaser. #TheChase.”

Answering the question correctly meant Anne was able to chase down James and Owen’s total.

The clever pair had already answered questions on topics including boxing and the Spanish Civil war.

Anne, 60, has appeared as a chaser on The Chase since 2010.

The I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! star has also been on Mastermind twice, Fifteen to One and Are You An Egghead?.

In 2017, Anne was ranked 65th in the World Quizzing Championships.

She has not referenced yesterday’s question controversy on Twitter.
