The episode sees Richard, Jeremy Clarkson and James May head to Madagascar in the hope of finding buried treasure.

Each presenter chooses a car that they think can handle the terrible terrain on the island, and Richard opts for a Ford Focus RS which he then adapts to try and beat the worst roads they have ever driven on.

However, the ‘road’ turns out to be worse than any of them could have anticipated, and Richard’s car soon flounders when night falls.

After hearing an almighty crunch, Richard says in a panic: “Oh sh**, my clutch has just gone. I don’t have a clutch. My pedal is stuck down.

“F***. I can’t mend a clutch. A clutch is a clutch and I haven’t got a spare one. It is finished. It’s dead.”

Richard had to admit defeat and accept the Ford wouldn’t be able to get him to the end of the challenge.

He later said: “This was the first time ever we had lost a car on one of our adventures.”

Richard previously told The Sun Online the hardest part of the new special was: “Just the relentless nature of that road.”

He added: “Repairs to the car and getting those trams back on was a brutal job, and then getting the thing moving again, then there’d be a noise and I’d be like ‘I don’t want to get out and see because I know what’s happened, I can feel it’.”

Richard continued: “It’s also a pretty rotten feeling when you know you’ve got six hours left to go and the other area already there and they’ve already opened a bottle of something nice.

“And they might be sleeping in a tent or sleeping somewhere rough but they’ve stopped moving and they can just sit there and chill out and I’m going to be hours and hours but that’s part of the adventure.

“Also it’s what people like to see, they like to see us uncomfortable and I was uncomfortable.”

The Grand Tour: A Massive Hunt is on Amazon Prime Video now.
