A24 V-Day is a mixed bag. If you’re happily in a relationship and you think it’s going great, then you’re all about the special day. But if you’re like the rest of the world, you fucking hate it. You’re single, you’ve been screwed over and you’re done with love. These movies won’t convince you that true love exists. In fact, they’ll reinforce what you’re feeling. Don’t forget to check out last year’s list HERE too for more gems.Fuck V-Day.
Rézo Films Trouble Every Day (2001)
There’s nothing better than a French Erotic Thriller to get your romance on. There’s obsession, twisted love, existentialism and a shit-ton of blood and sex.
Columbia Pictures Passengers (2016)
On the surface, it’s a film about a man and a woman, resigned to a journey to a new world together, and they fall in love. Deep down, it’s an ode to manipulation, stalking and Stockholm syndrome. He awakens her against her will, and she has no choice but to fall in love. It’s anything but romantic.
Canal+ The Piano Teacher (2001)
This is a fucked about movie about even more fucked up love. Another French film, this psychological thriller has a sexually-repressed piano teacher torture and manipulate a student. This is twisted love and masochism at its worst.
A24 The Lobster (2015)
This absurd and dystopian film is fantastically shot, but doesn’t really have a positive view of love. In this world, if you don’t find someone to be in a relationship with, within 45 days, you turn into an animal. And the shit the people get into, just to avoid becoming one, is just nihilistic and dark. It’s perfect those cynical of love.
Embassy Pictures The Graduate (1967)
Most will consider this a comedy-romance-drama and one of the great classics. Except, it’s a demonstration of some really bad relationship habits. Benjamin has a secret affair with a married woman, then decides to date her daughter, but asks like jerk. Then he tells her he fucked her mom, and kinda stalks her. There’s a wedding breakup, and that final scene where they realize they fucked up.Yeah, sounds romantic.
Paramount Pictures The Truman Show (1998)
When your entire life is a lie, it stands to reason that your love life is too. The scene where he freaks out on Meryl is really intense and hits home, if you’ve ever been insecure about a relationship.
Warner Bros. Star 80 (1983)
This film was based on the real-life murder of Playboy Playmate Dorothy Stratten. She’s a naive model, falls in love with a con man and marries him. He becomes controlling and when she tries to leave him, he shoots her and himself. This will turn you off of love.
The Weinstein Company Blue Valentine (2010)
I hate this film. It’s included in the previous list, but I had to put it here again, because I hate it. It scares me that someone you love to intensely, can become a victim to the same volume of hate and despair. Marriages are hard work, and sometimes all the stars and hearts at the start, just won’t cut it in the end.
Canal + Amour (2012)
This is another one that show’s how intense and enduring love can be, and what we’d do for the ones we love. But it also made me incredibly sad. It’s basically a film about an 80 year old couple and she suffers a stroke and he dutifully cares for her. But things get worse and a series of strokes cause him to do the most merciful thing he can do.
Universal Pictures Fear (1996)
An older one, but no less fucked up. The dark side of love, manipulation and stalking can really turn you off of love for good.
Mongrel Media Take this Waltz (2011)
Not sure why Michelle Williams has an attraction to films with messed up romances, but there you go. In this film, she plays Margot, who’s married to Seth Rogan’s Lou. But she’s unhappy in it, so she leaves him to date a man who lives across the street. Not finding happiness there, she’s left wondering what’s missing.Definitely not a film about the enduring sacrament of love and marriage, that’s for sure.
AVCO Embassy Pictures The Night Porter (1974)
This Italian erotic psychological drama outlines the modern-day relationship between a former SS doctor and his concentration camp survivor victim. If you want to prove to yourself definitely that true love is dead, this is your film.
Paramount Pictures mother! (2017)
This movie is all kinds of fucked up and I’ve seen it more times than I should, and I’m still feeling unsettled by it all. Him and Mother don’t have a healthy relationship at all, and their bizarre and surreal surroundings don’t help.
Warner Bros. Her (2013)
When the only romantic connection you can make is with an AI, and that AI eventually leaves you, it’s a pretty sad day. The film itself is fantastically shot, but the subject matter leaves me a little empty in the love department.Thankfully, the ending offers some promise of genuine love.
Lionsgate Away From Her (2007)
One of my biggest fears in relationships and aging, is dementia. I don’t think I could handle my s/o forgetting about me. This film has an aging couple enjoying each other until she gets dementia. Checked into a nursing home, she forgets her husband and develops a relationship with another patient. It’s a heartbreaking film that makes you wonder what the point of it all is.
