It all started when the gold BFM Coin came into play a few months ago. I noticed our average Friday beer and liquor grocery bill starting to really skyrocket. It’s the only bill here at theCHIVE we like getting bigger and bigger – Leo and I happily cover the costs for all Veterans, Active Duty, Cancer Survivors, and BFM Gold Coin Holders to drink as much as they like, that’s your privilege. We built this place for you.

But we thought we could do more on Fridays, go even bigger. So last Friday we flew in all the mixologists from General Horseplay, the Bill Murray bar in Key West. And then we partnered with Treaty Oak, the local distillery, to bring in the best Whiskey, Rye, and Gin in Texas. Almost 4,000 people RSVP’d for the Veteran’s Day event. Capacity at theCHIVE is 350. And if you got to be one of those 350…

You get to choose from one of many Murray-inspired cocktails that flowed all night long.

Every happy hour begins with a cheers to the fallen, to those service members who gave the last full measure so we could all be in this room.

…and we got confetti cannons.

Miles Zuniga from Fastball played for two hours. Sometimes a great singalong is just what you need. Thanks, Miles, you’re an amazing talent.
“… Anyone can see the road that they walk on is paved in gold!“

General Horseplay makes the original “Murricane” recipe in a recycled St. Murray candle. Best cocktail ever.

We had a surprise guest show up to the happy hour, Medal of Honor Recipient Ty Carter. At the battle of Kamdesh, under intense fire, Carter carried ammunition 100 meters across open ground from near his barracks to a Humvee at the south Battle Position multiple times, even after being wounded within the first half-hour of battle. After the enemy penetrated the perimeter, Carter laid down accurate fire under intense pressure to drive back the enemy. The battle, which started at noon, would not see help arrive until Midnight.
Carter’s heroics saved many of his brothers’ lives that day and it was an honor to have him at the HQ.

This was perhaps my favorite moment of the night. I was with a couple Chivers I randomly asked what they had in their pockets? – Two BFM gold coins came out, my Chive Charities coin which I always keep on me, and then Ty brought out the real hardware.

That’s just good company. It’s really what theCHIVE is about.
If you are a BFM Gold Coin holder you cannot be turned away for any event at theCHIVE HQ, you gain entrance for life. The date for the Christmas Gold Coin happy hour is set for Friday, December 20th. Everybody who gets the December Chive Box will have their BFM Coin in plenty of time to attend. (You can also come in any other Friday you like of course.)

On the 10th anniversary of the loss of her fiancé in combat, a woman found me at the party and asked if she could read his favorite quote.
“Once you have tasted flight you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward. For there you have been and there you will always be.”

A surreal moment.

Through all the reposts, the bad grammar, the videos that won’t play, the serial downvoting, etc…I still know that theChive is a good thing. A very good thing. And not JUST because of this type of post, and not JUST because it’s Veterans Day. It’s because they know enough to keep these priorities, along with helping so, so many others in need, in the highest spot on their goal sheet. Thank you Chive (and fellow Chivers) for being who you are. KCCO & KCSO
Anytime you get to drink with a MoH recipient, that is a memory to cherish!
Every Friday, all veterans, active-duty, first responders, and BFM Gold Coin members are free to pass in and out of theCHIVE without RSVP or appointment. And we’re taking our happy hours to all new levels as you can see. There’s not a publisher on earth who does this, and that’s what makes what we have here at theCHIVE so magical.
KCCO,
John
