Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy catch fire with matching 62s as Ryder Cup rivalries hot up at BMW Championship

TIGER WOODS and Rory McIlroy caught fire with matching eight-under 62s as Ryder Cup rivalries hotted up ahead of the showdown later this month.

American Woods fired his lowest opening round in almost 20 years while McIlroy was gutted not to join the ultra-exclusive 59 club.

Both surged to the top of the leaderboard at the BMW Championship – the third of four FedEx Cup play-off events – in Philadelphia, US.

And the duo will clash for America and Europe respectively at Le Golf National in Paris later this month.

Woods, who was selected as one of Team USA captain Jim Furyk’s picks, played his first nine in 29 at Aronimink.

And he did it after putting back in the bag the trusty Scotty Cameron putter he has used for 13 of his 14 Majors.

Woods said: “I’ve been monkeying around with it at home in the backyard through the summer.

“It just never felt right, but it feels good now. I’ve hit hundreds of millions of putts with that thing.”

McIlroy reeled off a career-best six birdies in a row to take the lead and have him dreaming of his first 59 – the holy grail of golf.

But he bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes on the par-70 track to leave him tied with his idol after the first round.

The four-time Major winner from Northern Ireland said: “What was worst was probably just not giving myself a better chance to shoot the 59.

“I can accept bogeys but you don’t get many opportunities to break 60 and today was one of them and I didn’t capitalise.

“But, look, jeeze, if someone had given me a 62 on the first tee this morning I would have taken it so it’s a great way to start the golf tournament.”
