THERE may be no such thing as a free lunch, but I can get pretty close.

We fork out an average of £1,580 a year on work lunches — which works out at £6.08 a day.

MEAL-DEAL STEAL: Tesco has been named as the best-value supermarket for meal deals, offering a sandwich, sub, pasta pot or salad, plus a snack and a drink, for just £3, saving up to £3.60.

Choose dearer items in the deal to get the most bang for your buck.

SAVING: £3.08 (compared to average work lunch)

ROLL WITH IT: Greggs’ sausage rolls will hardly break the bank but you can get meaty pastry treats for even less at the supermarket.

Iceland has a selection of frozen Greggs goodies to cook for yourself at home.

Grab a four-pack of frozen sausage rolls for just £1.79. They are ideal for lunchboxes.

Cook one in the evening to take to work for lunch the next day.

If you prefer steak bakes, Iceland has two-packs for £1.79. What’s not to like?

FULL OF BEANS: Head to Costa for its Coffee Club lunch deal.

This includes your favourite hot drink or iced coffee plus a choice of paninis and toasties, with a packet of crisps or a piece of fruit, for £4.95. The dearest combo here would usually cost £7.15, so that’s £2.20 less.

PREPARATION IS KEY: Buy in bulk and prepare your lunch for the week.

Pasta and rice are perfect, as they can be eaten hot or cold.

At Sainsbury’s, 1kg of pasta is just 60p. You can then vary your toppings.

Four tins of tuna are £2.69 at Aldi, which also has classic green pesto for just 69p.

Pot up what you want and stash each portion in the fridge to see you through the week.
