Tory grandee Lord Heseltine warns the party not to ape Nigel Farage

The Tories risk being captured by the ‘narrow nationalism, phobia-filled and poisonous politics of Nigel Farage‘, Lord Heseltine warned yesterday.

He said the party’s leadership race ‘fills me with dread’, adding: ‘There will be an arms race in which candidates vie against each other for who can be the most Faragiste.’

Yesterday he compared the Tories to the Communist Party for that decision. He added: ‘What is it you want me to do? To betray everything I’ve believed all my adult life?’

The lifelong pro-European said the party has become ‘infected by the virus of extremism’ and he cannot endorse its support for leaving the EU.

In an article for The Sunday Times, he said: ‘The reason for my experiment with the Lib Dems is, of course, the Government’s position on Brexit.

“I cannot, with a clear conscience, vote for my party when it is myopically focused on forcing through the biggest act of economic self-harm ever undertaken by a democratic government.”
