IF breakfast boredom has set in, I have just the treat.
Baked oats are trending on social media and no wonder — it is basically a breakfast cake.
Treat the kids to a delicious but healthy breakfast with these cheap baked goods[/caption]
Kids love this sweet but healthy wake-up food — and it is cheap too . . .
PLAIN AND SIMPLE: Baked oats are made using 40g of oats per person, 1 egg, 1tsp baking powder and 100g natural yogurt. You can also add a teaspoon of sugar or sweetener to taste. Mix the ingredients together well and pop into a small ovenproof dish. Cook at 200C for about 30 minutes or until browned on top. Serve with more yoghurt. Get Scott’s Porage Oats Old Fashioned for £1.50 with a Clubcard at Tesco. Usually £2.
THE NEW BANANA BREAD: Who has not made banana bread in lockdown? Well, it just got healthier. Instagram baker @cakeontherun has a great oaty banana bread recipe, serving it with maple syrup or banana chips. Yum. Head to Holland & Barrett for banana chips, £1.19 for 125g, or instead hit Asda, where you get more for less, at £1 per 150g pack.
BERRY NICE: Adding berries makes oats taste like a breakfast muffin. Include them in either of the previous recipes. You can buy 600g of fresh berries at Lidl for £4.60 or pick up 600g of frozen blue-berries for £1.99.
FUTURE IS ORANGE: Get creative and flavour your oats. I love orange extract. It is £1.70 at Waitrose but Morrisons now has Valencia orange extract for £1.25. You will soon be tempted to use it in all bakes.

MOTHER’S Day can be tough if you have recently lost a relative or can’t be together – and this year especially. So it is good of retailers such as Marks & Spencer and Boots to let online customers opt out of Mother’s Day emails if they want.
