HYPED-up spreads containing products such as avocado and coconut oil have been quietly ditched from supermarket shelves.
Many were launched just two years ago, jumping on a hipster and vegan bandwagon led by food bloggers and expensive restaurants.
But shoppers were turned off by high prices — and sales of items such as Tesco’s Avocado Spread, Waitrose Rapeseed and Coconut Oil, and Flora Avocado and Lime Spread fell.
Others complained they simply did not taste very nice.
Another possible cause is simply fashion.
At one point avocado was the most Instagrammed food on the website and ‘smashed avocado’ was all the rage with foodies.

Coconut oil spreads did not fare much better with the added problem of political correctness as some brands had palm oil as an ingredient which has been controversially linked with deforestation.
Trade mag The Grocer found at least eight of the most popular new wave spreads have been dropped.
A spokesman said: “The vast majority have quietly disappeared.”
