UK weather forecast – Britain to bask in unseasonable warm weather on Christmas Eve today… and it looks set to last

WEATHER watchers are in for a festive treat today as the recent heavy rainfall plaguing Britain will clear today – and it looks set to stay that way for Christmas Day.

There will also be above average temperatures for this time of year too – an added present for those hoping to make the most of December 25.

It will be a bright and clear day for many across the UK today, barring a few light scattered showers

The north will see the most sunshine especially in northern Scotland, Northern Ireland and Yorkshire.

As for the south it won’t be quite as bright but will have highs of around 12C – three degrees above average.

Martin Bowles, a meteorologist at the Met Office said: “Christmas day itself won’t be as nice as Christmas Eve and will be largely cloudy.

“But there will be sunny spells. For the South, Kent has the largest chance of seeing blue skies, and East Anglia,  East Midlands and even north east Scotland will get a bit of sunshine.”

He added: “Broadly speaking it will be a very dry day with very little chance of rain.

“A bit of drizzle on the west coast of England and the Beacon Beacons but that’s about it.”

It comes after several days of unsettled and stormy weather put a dampener on festive preparations across the country.

Motorists had to battle standing water and flash floods – especially in the South West.

Friday night saw 50mph gales and torrential rainy weather – as 2.8million extra cars hit the roads to make last-minute Christmas getaways.

Bookies even slashed the odds on it being the wettest December on record.

Ladbrokes had cut odds from 8/1 to just 3/1 earlier this week on 2018 having the rainiest December ever.
