Wales fans in heaven as their side beat Turkey 2-0 – almost certainly sealing Euro 2020 second-round

Elated Wales fans celebrate by packing out pubs at home as the team beat Turkey 2-0 in their Euro 2020 Group A match in Azerbaijan.

Wales’ Aaron Ramsey scored their side’s first goal of the game at the Baku Olympic Stadium, Azerbaijan.

Gareth Bale played a lobbed pass over the opposing defense and Ramsey chested it down before knocking it past onrushing Turkey goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir in the 42nd minute.

Bale had a chance to make it 2-0 but he missed from the penalty spot in the 61st minute. Connor Roberts added the second in the final moments of the game.

Wales has four points in Group A from its first two games while Turkey has zero after losing both of its matches.

Boris Johnson took to Twitter to congratulate Wales, writing: ‘Huge congratulations to @Cymru on their first win of #Euro2020. Well done to Robert Page and his squad.’

Hundreds of fans joined together at the Vale Sport Arena in Cardiff to watch the Dragons.

Turkey had strong support from traveling fans and many locals in close ally Azerbaijan. The presidents of both Turkey and Azerbaijan were in attendance.

The crowd was visibly larger than the 8,782 who watched Wales play Switzerland in Azerbaijan last week.

Both teams predicted it would be like a home game for the Turks because the country is allies with Azerbaijan and they have close cultural ties.

Posters reading ‘one people, two states’ and ‘Turkey, our hearts beat with you’ were on the walls of the subway system in the city.

The most recent meeting between these sides was in 1997, when Turkey won a World Cup qualifier in Istanbul 6-4 – the only time Wales have scored four times in a game but still lost.

Wales boss Page started in that game, having made his international debut against Turkey in 1996.

Turkey attempted just three shots against Italy, their lowest total in a European Championship match. None of those efforts were on target.

Defeat against Italy means Turkey have lost their opening match at all seven of their major tournament appearances. But they have advanced to the knockout stage the last three times they have avoided defeat in their second game (at Euro 2000 and 2008, plus the 2002 World Cup).
