WHEN he reached the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2014, Kieran Sutcliffe weighed a staggering 25 stone.
The singer, 30, who performed on the ITV show alongside his girlfriend Sarah Jameson, 34, had piled on the pounds after gorging on three McDonald’s meals a day.
However, Kieran’s wake-up call came when a close friend broke down in tears – fearing for his health.
Determined to do something about his size, Kieran decided to splash out over £10,000 for weight loss surgery and has since shed an incredible ten stone.
Kieran, from Shepshed, Leicester, said: “You honestly don’t realise at the time what you’re doing to yourself.”
Kieran first started to struggle with his weight when he started college.
“I was captain of the cricket and football teams and always pretty slim”, he said.
“When I went to Melton College I was busy all the time and I’d pick the unhealthy foods because that was just easier to do when I was on the go.
“It was there I started to gain weight.
“I think I just got stuck in a rut. At one stage I’d sometimes eat three McDonald’s meals in one day and it was spiralling out of control.”
Kieran’s weight continued to balloon, especially in the years following his time on Britain’s Got Talent – and he soon reached a whopping 25 stone.
“I was a big lad when we went on Britain’s Got Talent but over the next couple of years I got even bigger,” Kieran said.
Kieran’s family and friends began to get increasingly worried about his weight gain – until one friend told him he needed to do something, or face an early death.
When you’re 30 and reach 25 stone it’s a real worry and my friends and family had always been saying I needed to be more careful about what I eat
Kieran told Leicester Live: “When you’re 30 and reach 25 stone it’s a real worry and my friends and family had always been saying I needed to be more careful about what I eat.
“I was at a pub one day watching a football match with a good friend of mine when the conversation turned to weight.
“He’s a really jokey bloke but he broke down in front of me because he was getting so emotional about my weight.”
Kieran looked into options on how he could lose weight and soon decided to go under the knife in summer 2018.
He had keyhole surgery that cut out 80 per cent of his stomach and stapled together the remaining part – instantly reducing the amount of food he was able to eat.
The procedure cost £10,000 and the only way Kieran could afford it was to pay for it with his house deposit.
Kieran, who continues to work as a singer, performing on cruise ships and at various functions, said: “A house can wait – it was more important to get my health sorted and it’s added 15 to 20 years to my life.
“I had about three days after the operation with some chest wind but since then it’s been fine and I lost the weight rapidly.”
Following the surgery, Kieran spent weeks eating nothing but liquids and soft food while his stomach healed.
This helped him to adjust to his new diet, which is now full of fruit and other healthy treats.
He is now ten stone lighter and has seen his body mass index plummet from 47 to 28.
