Where is Mati village in Greece, what happened during the wildfires and how did the fire start there?

WILDFIRES in Balkan nation have destroyed the once spirited vacation village of Mati that has been the worst hit by the disaster.
Images and horrific stories emerged that ordered clean the alarming destruction once the quick spreading blaze weak the tiny community.

Where is Mati village in Greece?

Mati could be a beach-side resort is concerning eighteen miles east of the Athinai Athens.
The popular vacation spot is handy the port of Rafina from ferries will be caught to various Cycades Islands.

It solely has two hundred full time residents – however its hotels top off with tourists from Spring to time of year.

What happened during the wildfires?

Residents in Mati described how gale force wind fanned the flames which were large and fast moving.
The speed with which the fire spread took many by surprise and is believed to have contributed to the high death toll.
The fire brigade said at least 74 perished. That toll is expected to rise as the charred remains of buildings are searched.
Some people took refuge in their homes because the narrow streets had become crammed with cars.
Many people ran into the sea to escape on boats – but not all made it.

Rescuers found burned bodies of 26 people, some of them youngsters, huddled together in a field 30 yards from the beach.
They appeared to be embracing each other with authorities speculating the victims knew they could not escape and that the end was near.
Four bodies were also found by the coast guard floating off the beach.
One British man was among 187 people, including 23 children, who were taken to hospital with burns.

How did the fires start there?

Exactly what started the fire in Mati is still under investigation but most certainly dry conditions and very windy weather were a major factor.
The high winds of up to 60mph fanned the flames
Officials say the blazes could have been sparked by arsonists who wanted to loot abandoned homes.

Do British people go on holiday to Mati?

Mati is not a destination offered by any British package holiday firms.
But Mati is often used by UK tourists as a stop off point to island hop.
The Foreign Office said no Brits were missing or dead.
But it confirmed that a man was seeking treatment for burns and said that the consulate was assisting other holidaymakers.
An Irish couple on their honeymoon were also caught up in the wildfires.
It is understood that the couple became separated in Mati as they attempted to escape.
The woman, Zoe Holohan, is being treated in hospital for serious burns and her partner, Brian O’Callaghan-Westropp, is still thought to be missing.
