So, remember around the time John Wick: Chapter 3 came out and the director of that movie slipped up and revealed that a new Matrix movie was in development with the original directors?
Well, he was partially right. According to
Variety, a fourth Matrix movie is in the works, and while several familiar faces are returning, not quite everyone is back.
First up, the directors. The original Matrix trilogy was directed by the Wachowski sisters, Lana and Lilly Wachowski. For reasons that aren’t clear, only one sibling will be returning to the new Matrix, Lana Wachowski. She will be writing and directing, and the movie is slated to start filming at the beginning of 2020 (which would lead me to assume that this has been in the works for a while).
Now, the cast, and this is where things get interesting. Keanu Reeves (A.K.A. Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (A.K.A. Trinity) are both returning. There’s no word on if Laurence Fishburne is returning, but there’s some speculation. From Variety:
Plot details are currently unknown, as is how the role of Morpheus will be handled, originally played by Laurence Fishburne. Some sources say the role may be recast for a younger take.
Now, we could get into some other details here, but all of the news we have on casting is seriously strange. In case you don’t remember, Neo and Trinity weren’t exactly alive by the end of The Matrix trilogy, and the curveball of a “younger” Morpheus doesn’t clear any of this up (though, the “young Morpheus” plot point is consistent with many rumors over the last several years about a new Matrix movie, going back to 2017).
Oh, and as a little bonus, legendary comic book illustrator Geoff Darrow will be returning as a concept artist for this new Matrix film. He designed the look of the “real” world in the original movie, and the various machines in it, so I’m personally happy to see him back (he also drew the absolutely gonzo graphic novel Hard Boiled with Frank Miller, and if you like weird over-the-top sci-fi comics, check that shit out).
And that’s all we officially (and unofficially) know about the project. Honestly… I don’t know what to make of it at all. Considering this is going to be filming in about four or five months, we’ll probably hear a lot more about casting over the rest of the year, but working with what little information we have, I’ll just be cautiously optimistic for now.
In the meanwhile, I’m just going to watch this scene again, because it’s still legitimately one of the best gunfights ever committed to film:
