REASON WHY do SEAL Team-6
Why do SEAL Team Six and Delta Force soldiers wear such small armor vests in photos compared to standard Interceptor armor that gives much more coverage?
It’s a good question, photo above being the main reason:
Cpl. Brandon L. Blair holds out the enhanced small-arms protective insert plate that stopped a gunshot against him.
ABOVE is the lighter Vest typically worn by Special Ops. Operators.
Now, compare it to photo BELOW with regular Infantry’s current heavier armor…known as IOTV2.
Improved Outer Tactical Vest (IOTV)
The IOTV is compatible with:
-Deltoid and Auxiliary Protector System (DAPS) components
-ESAPI (Enhanced Small Arms Protective Insert)
-Enhanced Side Ballistic Inserts (ESBI)
It has a flame-resistant stand-alone shirt known as the Army Combat Shirt designed specifically for use with the IOTV.
And very importantly
-OTV’s groin protector
Let’s begin with the easy answer…
Spc. Ops Veteran Jay Faulkner
The Military allows SOF (Special Operations Forces) operators a lot more leeway in choosing their own kit than it does regular soldiers. This leeway is especially extensive when it comes to the operators of CAG (aka DELTA) and DevGru (aka SEAL Team 6).
They are highly trusted….
Most people know of “Delta” and “Team SIX” but the question can be answered by a Joint SOF member…b/c Tier 1 are now made-up of members from multi-SOF units.
FBI “Hostage Rescue Team” and CIA ultra secret M.A.D. Operators.
HERE is a BETTER answer from Kyle Christian
– Scout/Sniper 0317
– Special Operations 2D MarDiv
What’s that mean?
Dude’s a MARSOC sniper…he operates in Joint Spc. Ops. Force missions with Delta/SEAL Team Six.
That also means Kyle’s completed the MARSOF Advanced Sniper Course (MASC) whichis designed to train the Best-of-the-Best Marines in precision rifle fire to provide support to SOF operations.
Yep, you’ll never see Kyle Christian…just a little whiiiiistle sound and bye-bye.
From Kyle Christian
“They are called JPC’s or Jumpable Plate Carriers.”
“SOC Operators wear these because we work in smaller teams and have to carry a LOT more gear than regular infantry.”
“We (Tier 1/Joint Special Ops. Forces) bring everything we need to survive and carry out a special mission.”
“These jobs are much different than regular infantry so we sacrifice coverage for the added benefit of maneuverability.”
“Many times we are expected to carry out missions without anyone having known we were even there.”
“Also, a big factor like in the name Jumpable plate carrier, they are not as bulky because insertion by military freefall (parachute)…”
“…or amphibious (scuba/rebreather) insertion into an enemy territory.”
“The plate Carriers are as bare bones as possible but they still hold the necessary front and back plates and even side plates if necessary.”
“The bulky carriers are not bulletproof all over (like the collars and the groin protectors and all that….those are not bulletproof…it is just added bulk that may help in deterring shrapnel from near proximity blasts.
“…but those pieces will NOT STOP an AK-47 round.”
“Yes, more protection is always good but when you are doing a job where you need to move quick and stealth.”
“(Basically) there has to be a happy medium of protective coverage and speed of maneuverability.”
(Above is Soldier Plate Carrier System (SPCS) a.k.a. “Jumpable Plate Carriers”)
“Also, (important): EASIER-to-HIDE if you need to strip off your army fast
in the case of (enemy) Snipers.”
“When we get into our Ghillie suits and veg them up to our surroundings, that is all we are wearing.”
“We don’t wear any body armor when changed over into our Ghillie suits… hope that helps.”
Now for one more Sniper’s voice on the vests…
…Specifically, a sniper that fought in the Jungles of a DEADLY WAR…
James George – former Combat Swimmer (5301/5321) at United States Naval Special Warfare Command (1967-1970)
“Movement. In NAM we had NO vests.
They were NOT INVENTED yet.”
“The teams emphasize “shoot, move, communicate.”
The ability to utilize dynamic unit movement is one of the key skills that special operators possess, and in order to maximize speed, operators will sacrifice some protective weight for the ability to move quickly.”
Little know fact from James George:
“The actual invention (bullet proof vest) was stolen from SEAL Team Six Founders SS (along with the invention of) the pacemaker and satellite phone.
Thanks SEAL Team Six Founder Female Moffat AFB NASA Ames Test Pilots Navy Air.”
From EOD armor…
…to modern Light Vests…
…As the saying goes,
“Ounces = pounds & pounds = Pain”…that’s WHY bad-A Spc. Ops. Forces wear LESS ARMOR than reg Infantry.
Hope ya learned a little…thanks for giving the post a read. -Rick
