BOSTON — The Yankees acquired right-handed reliever George Kontos from the Indians for money and assigned him to Triple-A. The 33-year-old probably will substitute Adams on the massive league roster Sunday.
“We are going to know much more Monday,” Aaron Boone stated earlier than the Yankees’ 4-1 loss to the Red Sox Saturday at Fenway Park. “I talked to him [Saturday morning] and he felt good. I feel he’s planning on enjoying catch someplace the following couple of days and it’s his intention to make that begin.
“I’d say there’s a respectable probability he makes that begin, however we must see the way it unfolds the following couple of days. As of now we’re hopeful he could make it.’’
Kontos appeared in seven video games for the Yankees in 2011 and was dealt to the Giants for catcher Chris Stewart a 12 months later. In eight large league seasons, Kontos has appeared in 349 video games (all in aid). He was with the Pirates and Indians this season.
